ByBlock FAQs

ByFusion’s Standard ByBlock (BBK-011) is similar in dimension to a standard concrete masonry unit (CMU) - 15-1/2″ width x 7-3/4″ depth x 8″ height and weigh 22lbs.

Yes. ByBlocks have undergone independent testing for Compression (ASTM C165), Thermal (ASTM C518), Acoustic(ASTM E90), Fastener Withdrawal and Shear Strength (ASTM D1767), Flame Spread & Smoke Density (ASTM E84), Structural (ASTM E72), Thermal Expansion (ASTM E831), as well as Environmental screening (UL – CDPH Testing). Further details can be found in our ByBlock Data Sheet.

ByFusion Global Inc. is committed to ongoing testing, ensuring ByBlock meets International and regional building standards.

ByBlock has been designed with interlocking features where the block below fits into the block above. In addition to this, threaded rebar is anchored into your footer or base structure. Each ByBlock is then placed over the threaded rebar and dropped down into position. After your designated height has been achieved, a top plate is placed on top of your final ByBlock course. Using washers and nuts, post-tensioning is applied to the threaded rods which draws the ByBlock wall assembly together into one solid unit.

Like timber building materials, ByBlock is a Class 5 product. This means it will require a fire retardant in certain applications. These retardants are readily available in the market and are used in everyday building projects.

As per ASTM E84 testing, ByBlock have a Class B Flame Spread & Smoke Density with an applied fire retardant.

Yes. Despite its hefty 22lb weight, ByBlock is buoyant. This is due to the small air pockets which reside between sections of the shredded platic.

ASTM D1767 testing results using #10 screw with 2″ thread engagement returned 203 lbs/ft Withdrawal Strength, and 270 lbs/ft Shear Strength. Similar tests using a 3/8″ lag screw 3″ thread engagement returned 327 lbs/ft Withdrawal Strength, and 520 lbs/ft Shear Strength.

As a building material, ByBlock is intended to work in parallel with standard building products. Unlike concrete blocks, ByBlock will not crack or crumble, reducing material waste. Additionally, building with ByBlock does not require specialized skills, curing time or mixing of binding agents. This reduces project cost by approximately 54% and reduces time of installation by approximately 65% when compared to concrete block.

With excellent thermal and sound insulating properties, ByBlock is a practical and sustainable use for our unusable plastic waste. Once completed, you cover ByBlock with the finishing of your choice. Therefore, “burying” the plastic in your building project, instead of the landfill.

Yes. ByBlocks can be cut using standard tools – band saw, reciprocating saw, radial arm saw, chainsaw, etc. with a high tpi count. You can also cut them with a handsaw.

There is no limit to what you can build with ByBlock. As a multi-purpose, high-performing insulating building material, ByBlock can be combined with nearly every standard building product in the market. It sounds corny, but your imagination is the limit.

ByFusion will soon be releasing products into the market. These products include benches and recreational furniture, utility sheds, he/she sheds, retail spaces, and micro homes. Continue to check back or sign up to our newsletter to stay informed.

Yes. ByBlock can easily be painted using a sprayer or roller application. A plastic primer will be required to ensure proper adhesion to the plastic substrate.

Absolutely. Under the context of the LEEDv4.1 Ratings System, ByBlock can contribute to LEED credits for your building project.

ByFusion is just as concerned about the environment as you are.

ByBlock is CA Section 01350 Compliant and meets GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD GOLD criteria for formaldehyde, total aldehydes, and CREL/TLV levels.

Testing followed CDPH Standard Method v1.2 “Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers” and UL 2821, “GREENGUARD Certification Program Method for Measuring and Evaluating Chemical Emissions from Building Materials, Finishes and Furnishings Using Dynamic Environmental Chambers”.

ByBlock will contribute LEED credits to your building project.

Yes. Part of ByFusion’s development is to supply an array of ByBlock in varying shapes to suit a wide variety of applications.

ByBlock is a high-performing, insulating building material and is not intended to be exposed to the elements without an exterior covering. This could be one of any readily available products in the market; weatherboard, stucco, paneling, etc. This will protect ByBlock from weather, UV and any environmental degradation.

Every ByBlock purchase comes with a collection bag for construction debris. Because ByBlock is created using only steam and compression (no melting or extrusion) it is normal to have some pieces fall away when rough handling the material. These can be collected and sent back to ByFusion and we can use the debris to make more ByBlock!
